The Beloved Community is geographically located in one of Chicago’s 77 community areas called Auburn Gresham, situated on the south side of Chicago. Historically this was a vibrant community of stable African-American families; however it has increasingly been impacted by violence and crime in addition to rising unemployment and massive economic disinvestment. A number of quality retail and major industries left the community and took their accompanying jobs with them. This combined with a poor local economy gave birth to an underground market of illegal drugs and the associated gang turf battles. The foreclosure crisis has also substantially impacted this community, leaving abandoned buildings to become havens for crime or scattered footprints of overgrown vacant eyesores.
Needless to say; this is a challenging environment for kids to grow and for adults and seniors to flourish.
Through all these negative elements however, there remains a spirit of hope and an indomitable will among believers that change can come to this community.

The Beloved Community was incorporated in 2004 as the community development partner of St. Sabina to be a conductor of change in this community. Today we have experienced a rebirth but much still remains to be done...
